Just left and, let me say, everything was perfect! My family was served by the lovely Rio. She did an excellent job explaining the different options and telling us about the different locations. She was also very sweet and attentive to us! I can't wait to come back soon! Thank you Rio and El Gringo for a yummy meal!

Guac is the worst! ... I mean if I can even call it that, it's just smashed up avocado. No onion, tomato, cilantro, or salt. And it's over $6 for a small portion. I was pretty bummed because I was actually very hungry. I also ordered a fish taco which was the size of a burrito and I mean who minds extra big food but I couldn't even eat the taco it was so big ! It all got destroyed and I used a fork to eat it and it was mainly stuffed with lettuce. The fried fish itself was really good you just need to add some lime, fish sauce, and salt. Their salsa is very spicy for me but still good in my opinion. I decided to eat here because I read good reviews on here but I was sadly disappointed.

LOVE the Pollo Negri Soft Taco! The chicken is moist and flavorful. The perfect size for lunch. The service is prompt and courteous. Sat outside under an umbrella..best way to escape the office for lunch enjoying the fresh and healthy food, Definitely recommend!

How does this place have only 3 stars?! Its blasphemy. I'd like to begin by praising the chips. Hot, salty, and served with a delicious salsa that, while to spicy for some, really hit the spot for me. We ordered the carnitas burrito and chicken enchiladas with red sauce instead of the menu listed green sauce. I'm sure there is a pretty general expectation on how enchiladas should taste, in a good, homey way. Well, these pretty much nailed it. Loaded with dark meat (you are given a choice of white meat with no veggies mixed in or dark meat) mixed with bell peppers and onions, these came drenched in a delicious sauce and served with such delicious pinto beans. I'm usually not really a pinto bean kind of gal, but these were exceptional. Who knows what was in them, but I can tell you, they were delicious. My friend got the carnitas burrito in which, the carnitas had been smashed on the griddle and charred to perfection to reveal crispy edges on each bite which maintained crispiness once wrapped up into the burrito. Overall, I woke up wanting this the next day, which seldom happens with Mexican food for me. I googled "El Gringo Downtown LA" only to be greeted with a lack of results and the page navigating me back to the south bay. I'll definitely be back!

I was searching for lunch options near by and finally decided to give El Gringo a try. I went for their soup and salad combo with the pollo negro salad and the Xcholti: "Soul-Chee" soup which they claim is their most popular item. The serving sizes were very generous considering it was a half salad and "cup" of soup. The cup of soup was a huge bowl, a meal on it's own! I thought the salad was very tasty, their spicy ranch dressing really made the salad. The soup was a little bland, I added a couple spoonfuls of their salsa and that made all the difference. By the way, their salsa is pretty tasty. My husband and I couldn't stop eating it! Careful not to fill up on chips and salsa before your meal comes! They also offer a "skinny" menu with Low-Calorie, Low-Carb, and Low- Dairy options. The service was fast and friendly, and they have a few seats outside too.

Stopped by with my husband to grab a quick meal before returning home from work. The host/server was extremely nice and on it. If this was based on their service I would have given them 5 stars on that alone however I'm rating this on the food. We already knew that the food was going to okay, Mexican American usually means sour cream on the side, tostada bowls and wet burritos. I hardly ever come across a Mexican American restaurant that's extremely good. What surprised me was how greasy the food was and how they were trying to pass shredded beef as carne asada. Any type of Mexican food is only ever good based on their meat alone and theirs wasn't up to par.

Really enjoyed the food and outstanding service. First time here and will return. Ordered take out, food was carefully packaged for a short ride home to Torrance. No complaints.

I placed a to-go order. The portion sizes are plentiful. The time from order to pick up was quick. The ladies who assisted me were helpful. My chimichanga had good flavor, they are hard to find, so I always order it here. However, I ordered pork for the first time it was a little dry, I will stick with chicken from now on. The chicken has never disappointed. I would have given more stars if my guacamole had not been brown.

After having visited both the El Gringo in Hermosa, and the one on PCH in Manhattan Beach, was stopped in for a quick dinner before a movie... - Note we were not terrible hungry. - The staff was very attentive, quick with refills, and chips and salsa. - I had the Pollo Negro salad, and used the salsa as dressing. I found the chicken this time around was rather bland, but it was a serviceable salad, and was filling. My lady had a taco salad in the tostada bowl and she liked it but it was way overfilled with refried beans top to bottom, she mentioned that it should have been more proteins, less beans. - The chips were fresh, warm and crispy, and I do like the El Gringo salsa...it is spicy, but not irritating, with a good kick of cilantro and citrus note (always seems very fresh and not too watery). Being close to this location I think we'll be doing our Mex take-out here more than likely, so I guess I will get used to the nuances...no real complaints, just looking forward to a bit more flavor next time! ENJOY!

At the end of the day paid $11 + tax + tip (almost $14) for 2 chicken tacos re-fried beans and rice, house chips & salsa. No drink. It's a bit much for lunch, in my opinion. An under $10 lunch menu would be great. This is LA after all, with great Mex food everywhere, especially tacos, plenty of which are around $2, some of which make in house fresh tortillas...by hand. Considering the previous Mex restaurant, the ol'school Miguel's burrito house (So. Bay peeps should recall) it was all about very reasonable prices. Service, food, parking, cleanliness has always been above average.

Friendly, nice service. Bland food. If you like your Mexican food heavily Americanized..and, of course, taste is subjective...you will really like this place. Going back to La Villa.

Was getting over a cold and heard from a friend that El Gringo has a restorative soup made with chicken and rice. I had never dined at El Gringo so this was a good opportunity. It was almost full capacity inside the restaurant at noon. Good sign! There seemd to be only one server and she was hustling around taking care of all the tables. Gave me a chance to look over the choices. There it was! Xochitl (soul-chee)! Chicken & rice with fresh chopped tomato, cilantro, and slices of avocado. Cup or a bowl? Only a small diff in price, so lets go for a bowl! The soup arrived and it looked delicious! Upon first taste, the broth was very mild. Maybe it was my remaining illness impairing my tastebuds but i was hoping for a bit more flavor. Also felt it needed a bit of salt. I will try El Gringo again to compare the soup with my first try and probably try other items. I also love supporting independent restaurants for their tenacity to stay alive in increasingly corporate cookie-cutter America.

No lunch menu, really? This place is only for dinner. The chips and salsa were decent. That's all I ate before I left for a place that wants to make it easy to get lunch. Everything is a la carte or a pricey dinner. What's the draw to come here for lunch, none.

El gringo is my to go spot if I am craving Mahi Mahi burritos to go. I never dine inside so my review is for food only. Unfortunately I have a bad habit of always ordering the same thing over and over. El Gringo Fish Burrito has grilled Mahi Mahi fish, beans, rice, lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro, sour cream, guacamole & spicy fish sauce. It is huge and I can only eat less than half of the actual burrito but it is so yummy :-) I always call in my order and every single time my order has been ready by the time I arrived and they never made any mistakes or giving me a wrong order.

I don't think you should post an online review of a place until you've been there a few times. We all have our off and on days, including service and retail types. In saying that, I've ordered lunch "to go" about a half dozen times or more and actually sat down at this location once. It's always been a good experience. I usually get a salad and sometimes soup. I actually crave their salads most days and if they were closer to work then I think I'd be there more often. The "sol-chee" soup is GREAT if you find yourself with a cold or flu....or just a cold night. The staff is friendly and I've never had any service issues at this location. I like that it's not overly crowded at lunch and if ordering a "to go" it's always ready to go when I walk in. Good job Redondo Beach El Gringo!!

I drive by this place all the time but had never eaten there until the other night. This place is pretty easy to miss cuz it's so nondescript in the middle of a generic shopping plaza next to like a dry cleaners lol . Torrance Blvd and Prospect are the major cross streets and then it's just a little west on Torrance Blvd. Parking was easy. Parked right in front and it wasn't too crowded in this lot on a Saturday night n e way. I actually really like the carnitas plate here. It's exactly how I like my carnitas. Braised soft and tender but then pan fried a little to make it crispy on the outside. Perfecto! I didn't think my meat was too salty but 2 other people in my party ended up sending their food back cuz it was "too salty" but I think they smoke crack. Chips and salsa were very fresh but the chips tasted store bought. Salsa was fresh and had just a little kick too it. It was hot w/o being too hot. Which isnt saying much coming from this light weight gringo.

I had a terrible experience with the waitress on Tuesday. She told me that she works every Tuesday and has long straight dark hair. I told her my order of 7 tacos and she said she could only give me 3 half off. Then she said "would you like to talk to my manager?" I said yes and pulled out my phone and asked for the number. She then said that she could not give it to me and walked away. I should always be able to speak to the manager if there is a conflict. She avoided eye contact and me raising my hand for a good 10 minutes. I have never been ignored so obviously as a customer. She finally gave me my tacos and whenever I would say thank you she would not reply or even look at me. I got no goodbye which would not have been bad however every other customer was told goodbye. Worst service I have ever experienced and I am only 17. It was so bad that I had to make an account for this. Kiarra is a good waitress though and the food is always delicious.

The food here is average. The fish tacos are bland and the salsa tastes like Tostitos. I wasn't impressed by the food and it definitely was not worth the price.

I grew up in the south bay and have frequented many restaurants. Been very careful when it comes to my severe food allergy to eggs. I have gone to El Gringo many times and the food has been good. Last time I visited will be my last. I ordered a basic beef burrito. It came out fast and hot, we all love that! Except after taking a few bits there it was...Scrambled EGGS. The cook had put it in by mistake. A restaurant where the cook doesn't know the menu isn't a place I want to go. I will never go back.

3.5 My stars: (5=epic "best of") (4=really tasty and want to go again and again) (3=good and will go back once in a while) (2=fair, might return for a visit if there was some glimmer of hope) (1=avoid at all costs) Go or No? Go. Tease: El Gringo is a fairly well known Mexican/American restaurant in the Torrance/Redondo area. Why I went: I've always wanted to try it... When: 8/7/13 Food: My wife ordered a carne asada taco, and I ordered their street taco plate. The carne asada taco was tasty. The seasoning was heavy...a shade salty, but not much so that it wasn't good. The street tacos are 4 small tacos. I got 1/2 w/ chicken and 1/2 with carnitas. Both were excellent. The chicken was really moist and tender. The carnitas were pan fried at the end and had a nice crispiness. It was kind of odd compared to many other places...but very good. Everything tasted fresh. The salsa especially! Service: Very good! Hints/Final thoughts: We were told the burritos and their soup are the most popular...but we opted for some lighter items. Next time, we might just up the ante!

For whatever reason my dear iphone has been playing tricks on me and saying my current location is Boulder Colorado. This happened last night and while I was sitting at El Gringo in Redondo Beach CA. CRazyNess! Mel and I ventured into El Gringo for lunch today. An old roommate of mine used to work here and I have been having a taste for one of their Mexican Pizzas she used to bring me home from time to time. We were greeted by a friendly gal who told us to take a seat wherever and with a wham bam thank you mam she brought us menus, chips and salsa and took our drink order right away. My kind of service at a place like this. Salsa was spicy! And chunky! And really fresh! I forgot how good their salsa was. I think it is at the top of best salsa of chips and salsa. I went for the Mexican Pizza and Mel went for the Chicken Flautas with Black Beans and Rice. Food came out fast and piping hot! Portions are more than generous here. The Flautas looked great and I will probably be ordering them on my next visit here. The Mexican Pizza was just as I remembered it. Huge and loaded with sauce and layered with beef and refried bean goodness. I ate not even half and I just couldn't eat one more bite of the beast. My giant sodie got the best of my tummy and filled me up. I wish I could have taken the rest home but it is not one of those items that you can reheat. ): Food and service was really good, salsa is fantastic and it is close to home. All in all, I am glad I ventured back here and will return. Oh and for those that like a bevy with their mexican food they have margies avay.

I wanted to take my lovely brother to lunch and this is what he chose. El Gringo? Really? I would've taken you to Benihana, or AYCE Korean BBQ or even sushi and you choose El Gringo? Ok, I guess this is ok considering that we're mexican. Here's how I did... We pulled in around 12:30 and there wasn't a table available on the inside restaurant. There were a couple tables outside, thing is....It was pouring. Of course there are 2 four-top tables that 1 douche is sitting at at while his laptop is on the table, his feet are on a chair, his laptop case is on another chair and his european man bag is on another chair. Listen up D-Bag, you're by yourself, you're a geek, you only deserve 1 chair. Leave your purse in your convertible volkswagon jetta. I've been to places by myself numerous times but when I do i take only as much space as I need. I probably wouldn't have cared but the fact that the geek had a purse really bothered me. Get rid of your purse you nerd. Onto my review...... We order a beer and wait about 10 minutes for our table. Once we get seated we get chips and salsa and the salsa was pretty good. I was hungry, so maybe it was average but I needed nourishment. The lunch size burritos are for children. I mean pathetic. We both order the normal carnitas burrito (wet) and it was really good. I wish I could've posted a comparison pic because the lunch burrito is only a couple dollars cheaper but less than half the size. A few beer a piece, a burrito a piece and about $40 with tip. Not bad but not great. When I go to lunch I want a lunch special not a lunch rip-off. Will I again? Yeah, eventually. The food is good. Here's a tip for you El Gringo, why don't you make your lunch special a little more special. You should be embarrassed of your lunch time burrito.

Not the best, but pretty damn good. Ordered a fish taco and a chicken taco. Enjoyed them - great service too!

Pretty solid mexican food, there are better sit down places in South Bay. But we get it to go usually when that burrito hankering turns up. Three stars only because I know there are better places around town.

On the website it says it's Voted Best Mexican Restaurants, there's 3 in the area. Yeah OK. If you drop off a bus load of Canadians or Asians, and it's there first experience, then yes it could be the best. In Southern California, were on every other corner you can find a taco shop or Mexican restaurant, large or small. This is noway the best. This is a white mans, taco shop, mexican restaurant plan and simple, not spicy, cooked to make it look Mexican in some ways. From looking at some of the pass reviews, it's a soccer moms and dads mexican restaurant, nothing more nothing less. Within the short time my friend and I where there, 2 or 3 family came in with all their kids under 10 years old, maybe this really is a Mexican chuck-e-cheese. The Food, my incredible beautiful friend had 2, Pollo Negro Tacos, it's chicken marinated in some lite spicy sauce. She loves them, poor soul, I will help show her the light to good chicken tacos. I had 2 tacos, 1 Negro, 1 Carnitas. The Carnitas Taco, maybe it's a mix of chicken breast and pork, whatever it was it wasn't that good, no flavor at all in the meat, to compensate for the no flavor you get a half of a head of lettuce on top of the taco, along with tomatoes, onions and I think there was cilantro, but I'm not really sure. They do use 2 corn tortillas, I find it odd sometimes when they can't line up the tortillas, it's pretty damn easy one on top of the other, the tortillas are paper towel thin, one bite and it breaks down the middle. I have a great idea, go to Del Taco and ask to buy 10-20 pounds of carnitas for the day, it's 10 times better and looks like carnitas. The Chicken Taco, it's chicken without the pork, pretty much the same deal only add cheese. The salsa is good, you'll need it for each taco, to add some flavor that you didn't find in the meat. Chips are ok, maybe store bought, not warm not cold, just chips in a bowl. Could be the extra large bag of tortilla chips from smart-n-finial looks and taste the same. 4 tacos, with a small farm on top of each one. 2 stars because the ice tea and salsa was ok. Thank you for the dinner, next time I'm buying and I'll find the taco shop.lol.

The Green Burrito here is where it's at. I call ahead and take out usually. The food is a little over salted generally but it's a good change of pace from other mexican joints in the area. The name is accurate as it is 'americanized' mexican. The waitresses are for some reason SUPER FLY. I have no idea how they got such cute friendly smart amazing girls working there, but they did it. Now if only the place was busy enough for them to make the right kind of money to be happy to see the customers... ;) Seriously though, try the green burrito or the El Diablo burrito. If you like the challenge of a 'big burrito' you'll enjoy El Gringo. By the way, they have other food than just burritos too :)))

It's easy to complain about this place, but if you do it right, it's just fine. First time I went to the Manhattan Beach location with my dad on a Taco Tuesday. We totally over ordered with 2 giant tacos each plus a quesadilla. Quality was quite good, perhaps excellent. Key is to order less or bring more people. There was a bit of a wait (it's tiny!) Beers were a little expensive, however. Second trip was to this closer Redondo location. We came fairly early, and were seated promptly. Had a grilled fish tostada. It was perfect, and a bargain for $8. Tons of fish! It was one of those times that you're already looking forward to the next trip while you're still eating the first time! I'm such a weirdo. Hmm...maybe Taco Tuesday tonight?

  • Cara L.

I ordered 3 tacos: blackened mahi mahi, steak, and chicken. Even thought they were a decent size I feel for +$15.00 I was over-charged. Theres a lot of fish in the fish taco and the sauce thats in it made it ok. The chicken one was a bit dry and i'm not a huge fan of cheese on my tacos. Their salsa for the chips is not bad and helps moisten the dry meats. I guess they tailored their food to accommodate "Los Gringos"? ;) Service was great and it has a cute atmosphere, but I don't recommend this spot for "legit" mexican food.

    (3)
  • Nick F.

Underwhelming minor mexican chain, the salsa is the best feature as it has a nice amount of heat to it, other then that, its a dive mexican spot, that is a faceless place compared to all the other dive mexican spots in the area...El Gringo does nothing to separate itself from the crowd, and the food sits on the low end of blow out a toilet mexican...you can find better

Just went here for lunch today because we had a coupon... that we forgot to use. This restaurant is small but quaint we sat our selves at the direction of the hostess/waitress. Our waitress was very helpful, friendly and got us our drink order right away and gave us chips and salsa. The salsa was good I would say the same as most Mexican restaurants. They had a lunch menu I picked the Jr. Burrito with shredded beef with rice and beans. I threw on my usual Tapatio and it was eating time. When all was said and done with not much left on my plate I felt satisfied.. I mean full / stuffed... The food tasted good. The service was GREAT! I just got done reading all of the bad stuff below about service but I am here to say the opposite we had one server and then a second one came and filled our drinks by the way love the uniforms.. That is my inside joke. The only bad thing I can say about this place is the price for lunch was in my opinion too much. I would not go back unless I had a coupon or they lower there price. I think a fair price for what I had would have been $7 not $9.50 plus drink. I will recommend this restaurant to those who have a little extra lunch budget.

"Oh. My. God. What....IS this????" Those were the words that came out of my mouth after I pulled a giant LEAF out of my shredded beef taco from El Gringo. Now, the leaf wasn't even the worst part. It just...surprised me, was all. As the McBoyfriend and I searched for some Mexican food to eat (I was starving, by the way -- as I always seem to be when I find horrible food), we decided to pop into El Gringo. I was afraid. The place was empty and it smelled weird. I was also disappointed to see packaged tortillas instead of fresh. Oh well, whatever. I was hungry. I ordered my usual, that I get from ANY Mexican place. Taco, enchilada, and rice/beans combo. It's normally at most $7. Here, it was $10.15 (!!!) Expensive Mexican food?? Alright, but it better be some damn-good gourmet fare. Enter my meal: absolutely destroyed by a blanket of thick, congealed cheese (and I like my cheese), coupled with the fact that there was no flavor. Is "hot" a flavor? And not spicy-hot. I mean temperature-hot. Because the fact that it was hot was the only thing "flavorful" about it. My taco was soggy and sad, filled with the briniest, saltiest, meat I've ever had (and the aformentioned leaf). That meat tasted like it had been floating in the Dead Sea for about a week. Good grief. YES, their salsa is good. But honestly I don't think I've been to a Mexican food place that didn't have good salsa. The fact that I paid so much for this pile of crap made my (still-hungry) stomach hurt even more. I tried, stomach, I tried. *cries*

Ah, memories. I avoided this spot out of nostalgia, because this was my hangout with a friend when I was in JUNIOR high. It was Miguel's burrito house back then, and we would scrape up enough cash for a plate of nachos and call it a meal. It was pretty much a greasy dive that didn't mind a bunch of teenagers hanging around. So seeing that it had changed names I was stubbornly against giving them a try, but they were open on New Year's Eve for lunch and we needed food. I was reluctant but it turns out, I'm the idiot because their salsa was so damn good that within a few bites we had already resolved to buy a pint to take home. I ordered a Zapatecas salad and it came so covered in steak that I couldn't see the salad beneath it. The carne asada was seasoned and simply mouthwatering. My husband had some sort of grilled fish on a salad that he says was excellent. This place is nothing like the greasy dive with folding chairs I remembered fondly. They have obviously remodeled and have an actual waitperson now. In fact, the farther I get in this review the stupider I feel. Definitely El Gringo is nothing like my memories of greasy chips and cheese.

I give a place at least two visits before I decide to forever categorize it. That being said, I feel confident in my decision to go with Dos stars on this one. There is just nothing that is out of the ordinary about this place. The food is just . . . . . eh. It feels as if it's missing something. Flavor perhaps? Love? Maybe just a kick in the ass. I dunno, I do know that there is no reason for me to return for a third visit unless someone else is paying and it includes beer. Then by all means, sign me up.

I went for the first time the weekend before last and had great service and the food was decent. We figured because it was close by we would try again. This time service was terrible. While our server over the weekend had a friend visiting her we always felt as though we were being taken care of. Last Friday I had to wait to order a drink, wait to place my food order and then wait to even pay. Now if we were packed in like sardines I would understand but it was after 8 PM and kind of slow. I'm sorry but maybe I'm old school but if you're working as a server you shouldn't be serving your friends nachos and then eating some of them while standing with your hands and then turn around without cleaning said hands to serve folks... and then a little while later sitting down with them as other tables are looking around for their server... Got better places to spend the green...

so my first time here i got take out. of all the locations this one is the biggest and the parking is easy. our server let us know about their happy hour specials right as we sat down (3-5pm m-f). i went for the HUGE 2-for-1 tacos and my friend got the taco salad (20% OFF). the food was great and the service was quick....... i prefer to beat the crowds, and there is outdoor seating i will take advantage of the next time i come!

taco tuesdays are great--2-for-one tacos! i don't think i would be stoked off paying full price though. i always get the grilled mahi with the sauce on the side (otherwise it is drenched in mayo). and i agree with brandy--stick to beers because the sokaju (rice wine liquor) margaritas are sooo grossssss!!!

This place is pretty chill... usually goto the manhattan one but this one is way closer to my pad now. Food is good, nothing over the top but they sure give you tons of food. If your feeling the "gringo" style mexican food.... go here. if your feeling the real mexican stuff.. goto el burrito jr. down the street and pay half the price.

I can't believe some of the complaints on this place. The salsa?!?! It's wonderful! It's made fresh and jumps out of the bowl...you can tell it's the real deal because it's usually a little bit different from visit to visit- in a good way! That's what I like that about it. Sometimes it's a little more spicy than others and that tells me it's made by a person, with fresh ingredients. The carnitas rock and again, sometimes they really rock and sometimes they just kinda rock, but that's what makes me like this place. It's real food made by real people. The servers and the cooks are friendly and that's another thing I look for when I spend my money going out to eat locally- a real experience with real people cooking real food. Love the tacos, love the Xcholti soup, love this place!

We live down the street from this El Gringo. I think what we didn't like most (besides the REALLY) slow service, was that --we think-- the prices are different than the Hermosa/Manhattan ones... although we aren't positive. If they aren't different... then they just raised their prices way too much for my interests! I think it's expensive for the dirty-ish Mexican food cooking that you want. And... I believe they serve WINE margaritas. Sheesh. Definitely drink beer instead. That selection is decent. I'd check out La Playita or something instead.

Slightly more expensive then a comparable mexican restaurant such as Lupitas or El Sombrero or Sions. Salsa tastes like it is tostitos brand salsa... if you like that kinda thing. Chips were cold and we had to physically get up to go get more because the waitress disappeared for a good 10 minutes... after coming back immediately grabbed our drinks and went to refill them, at least the service is good.... nope... she filled it up with the wrong drink. Meat was chewy and fatty and the flour tortilla must have been old because cutting into it was very difficult. Had the El Diablo burrito by the way and aside from the chili pepper flakes on top there was nothing hot about it. Will I come here again? Nope.

I order the Xolchi soup & a Carnitas burrito. Both were so salty I could not eat them. It was repulsive. The burrito was covered in garbage "ranchera" sauce that made it taste like the bottom of a (salty) garbage can... The prices are also ridiculous - $14.95 for a burrito? Really? I called and spoke to Bill the manager and he said he'd refund my money. He never did... My wife & I used to enjoy this place regularly but the food has clearly gone down hill and the owner is doing the business a dis-service. Never again...

Best green sauce Ive ever had and the carnitas are pretty damn good too. A little over priced but the restaurant it self has a great feel and the girls are super cute.

I love the salsa here. Unfortunately sometime in the last couple of months they have decided to raise their prices...I love their tacos but for 3.75 it seems you would get more than one or at least beans or rice. nope just one lonely taco. and its pretty standard...i used to love the asher burritos too but they have seemed to decline in flavor as well. I have given up el gringo which is just blocks from house and hopped in car to take up el burrito jr on torrance and hawthorne as my mexican fix spot.

I love me some mexican and usually haunt the shops near me if they make a good taco. El Gringo is RIGHT near my house so I eat here a lot and I enjoy the food and atmosphere. The tacos are big and stuffed and very tasty. I've had the hardshell tacos (packed) and the carnitas baja tacos (mmm, my new fave). Chips and salsa are good too. Nice selection of import beers and an atmosphere of tropical Mexico. Service can be good but sometimes slow depending on time of day. Doesn't seem well organized but I like the laid back atmosphere. Prices are a little higher than I'd like and a bit inconsistent (for instance why is guac 5 dollars for not very much?). But I keep going back for the tasty tacos and a Modello.

What beats a monkey on a surfboard? Constant sports on the flatscreens at both sides of the room. Since when is Poker a sport? And Pool. Really? On ESPN? Must be a slow sports afternoon. Boxes of beer stored against the back wall. Obviously lacking in the storage space. Great casual hangout and often see families with kids here. Xcholti. Zacatecas. Klaatu barada nikto. Mexican pizza. Either you love it or are disgusted with it. I love it. It's the ultimate mexican comfort food. You barely chew it. Like a Mexican meat loaf. Like a Chicken pot pie. Mex Pizza is the default. Feeling a cold coming on? Xcholti. Pronounced "Soul-Chee" Yeah, put a little of this hot and steamy chicken soup in your soul and chase the germs away. Asher burrito is also a nice fall back. Dependable and tasty. Most of the combos I've tried have also been pretty reliable. Chips and salsa are good and table service keeps them filled along with your drink. Salsa can be on the spicy side, but not enough to kill ya. Prices lean a tad bit on the high side, but there's a MONKEY ON A SURFBOARD. El Gringo eyyahhh! We don't need no stinkin' badges!! Aiiyyyaahh!

I come here when I'm craving Mexican or their famous Xcholti soup. OMG! It's like something your mom would make when you're sick. Pure, natural chicken/chicken brother (not from a can), with rice, avocado, onion, tomatoes. It's even better on a rainy day. It's almost like Mexican Pho. haha Even a half bowl is humongous. Where can you get turkey tacos? Mexican is not healthy, but at least you have options. Their Diablo burrito is fantastic. I'm not a fan of spicy, but it's good. The only thing spicy about it is the sauce over it. I could totally eat the inside. All their ingredients are fresh to death!

I wouldn't go back. WAY over priced (twice as much as other Mexican restaurants, El Indio to name one) and very, very over-salted. The service was very fast & friendly tho...

Not great food, and way over priced. I have been there twice because it is right down the street from my house, the portions are big but not tasty.

I think the name about sums it up......"whitey".....while this place is not terrible by any means...its just standard; pretty good salsa, good for taco tuesday (2-1)....I usually get the mahi taco IF I go here, and I live so close I could probably throw a rock and hit it....and I still don't patronize this place but a few times a year, so that tells you its not very exciting....just standard, but not gross........yet ;)......and a tad overpriced for the quality/quantity....average around $10 a plate w/no drink

I have never written a review before, but after my experience tonight I was driven to do so...I am originally from Texas, a HUGE fan of yummy, fresh Mexican food have eaten at El Gringo Redondo (and Hermosa) for the past 4 years. I always send friends and family to the restaurant because of the great prices and wonderful food- until tonight. I stopped to pick up our weekly order -a Mahi taco, Baha Chicken tacos, rice, beans and their excellent chips and salsa. And it was $54!!!! (without tip) Are you serious?!! The girl that rang me up sheepishly told me CHIPS ARE NOW $10, SALSA IS $9 and both entrees and sides had gone up!!! As a small business owner I understand the need to sometimes raise prices, but $10 for chips is unconscionable!!!!! I don't know if the owner changed, or just got greedy, but I sadly won't be back unless this changes :( :( :(

Freshest Mexican food in town. Yeah, you can go elsewhere and get the "authentic" stuff if your belly can handle greasy shlop. I love their burritos with the house chicken. My gf gets the soup which is pretty tasty. I always love the carnitas. Try it. Parking is easy. Service has never disappointed and the music in the place is always cool. Taco Tuesday is a great deal, too.

This place is always good. I really like the carnitas, tasty -and not too greasy. Never had anything I didn't like. The portions really large - so split an order or take home leftovers for a good lunch the next day. The servers are friendly and provide good service without hovering. Good for take out too.

Possibly good for having a beer with a friend but not a great place to eat. Food is light on flavor & certainly isn't authentic. Service varies but has been on the slow side every time I've been there so get used to being ignored for a bit.

So sad how quickly this spot fell apart. I used to come here for the great Taco Tuesdays, but over the past year the food and service have suffered greatly. The tacos used to be huge with enormous amounts of meat and toppings. Now, they are about the size you would expect from a street vendor. Also, what the heck happened to the service? The girls before were prompt, courteous and helpful. Now they seem to only employ high schoolers who can't wait for their shift to be over. Definitely not what it used to be.

El Gringo is a solid Mexican joint for this Gringo. It's a great little spot if your in the neighborhood, or after a long day day at the beach. The space is nothing special, but its certainly an upgrade over the place that used to be there before called Miguel's Burrito House which just scared me. The chips and salsa are fantastic although make sure you get a soda or an ice cold beer because the salsa is a butt-kicker! First thing you'll notice is the prices are high for a whole in the wall. That's the only reason I didn't give El Gringo 4 stars. They do however, give gi-normous portions which eases the sting slightly. Im a huge fan of their Machaca and their Chille Relleno is pretty good as well. Burrito's are large and can be ordered "wet" with all the fixings. El Gringo is great for takeout and parking is pretty ample because it's located in a small litle strip mall. Another great deal is their Taco Tuesday...essentially is a buy one taco and get one free. Don't be put off by the 3 and 4 dollar taco prices...they are huge and when you get one free on top of it....you'll definately be muffin-topping out of your jeans when you leave. Overall, standard, tasty Southern California Mexican at slightly high prices.

Worst $5 taco I have ever had. WAY too salty. And no, that price didn't include any sides. The salsa tasted like it came out of a can. El Gringo, indeed. Nothing approaching real mexican flavor at this place. For that price, and lack of authenticity, I'll stick to Wahoo's.

Quality !!! this is a really good mexican restaurant...prices are really reasonable and it has a nice, chill vibe. We went on a weeknight so it was not busy at all. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted immediately and the waitress was extremely nice. She gave us time to look over the menu and gave us a nice helping of chips and salsa to munch on. the chips were really good and i loved the salsa, but it was a little on the spicy side for my girlfriend. my gf ordered the carne asada plate which was priced around $12 and was a huge portion which came with steaming hot tortillas. I got a 'wet' mahi mahi burrito which was also very large and priced around $10. The fish was extremely tender and really hit the spot. We had a coupon, so we basically had a huge meal for around $14. We have two more coupons in our entertainment book to their other two locations in hermosa and manhattan beach and you better believe we will be using them.

Super good, cheap, and the soup that starts with an X ( not even going to try and spell it) is awesome. On Taco Tuesdays it gets a bit packed but totally worth it.

I loved the (fried) fish taco!! I will definitely be back for this. The carnitas taco was good too, but I'll probably try something else next time. Their chips are rather so-so though. I love that this place is just a short walk away from home!

Horrible customer service! Rude waitress and greeter if that's what you call her.....on Oct 8th I came into order food to go. The blonde girl was on the phone with someone trying to fix the register. She never once made eye contact or even greeted us. Finally after waiting about 5 mins a young girl named Tina comes up to us and says she trying to fix the register so we can't help you right now. She is not sure how long it will take so we can either wait but he has no time period. But we should probably just go somewhere else. I asked her I just want to order food to go can I do that? She said "no we can't do that". I then asked "How long it would be?". She said she had no idea and there was nothing she could do. I then asked for the managers name. She gave me the to go menu to call. As I was walking out the blonde girl finally removed her concentration from the register and said "the manager is on the phone what did you need.". I said "I would like to talk to them." She said "well what can I help you with." I explained "I just wanted to order food to go and she told me to go somewhere else." Then the blonde said "well what did you want to order?" I said "absolutely nothing from you guys."......... I understand if a register is down then just take cash and do the math. Don't be rude ever number one. Number two never send a customer away. All they had to to was say we can only take cash and maybe manually add up the price of food an tax. But that would be too hard for these girls.I am a customer that goes frequently with local friends. I will gladly let everyone know how rude this was and take my business to El burritto .

Yummmm! Right by my work so I get lunch here often. I love their salads and carne asada tacos. Food is always good and portions are big. No liqueur though , just beer and wine margs.

This place consistently satisfies. Given they have several locations (and a catering service) they obviously know what they're doing to be in business for so long. Family-owned! I love that I can sit outside (which is a rare treat in most of 90277). Not sure who does the hiring, but the waitresses are also consistently wonderful (to look at). ;)

Always great service with just the right amount of a crowd to make it comfortable, but loud. The food has such good, authentic flavor. I'm never disappointed. The only negative is that some menu items are a tad overpriced. That said- I still keep coming back!

Funny thing has happened over the last year or so..... I would go to El Gringo on a pretty regular basis (usually for their Taco Tuesdays) and it was a good deal. Granted, i never liked their carnitas but all the other stuff on the menu was pretty good. Then I was on yelp and saw some poor reviews and decided to see for myself....well they were right (unfortunately). My last experience there was on about a week and a half ago. I got two tacos, one crispy fish (my previous fav.) and the Asada. When the plate came out I was pretty surprised. The tacos were smaller than before ( idk if it was downsized for taco tuesday or what). And now you HAD to buy a drink (not that I wasn't going to). I was mildy happy with the fish, but the asada was weak. I can safely say that this place has been downgraded from 4 to 2 stars with all the other forgettable Mexican food spots in LA. Time to bring your A game, Whitey. P.S. The "margaritas" have no tequila in them....just FYI.

This place is close to where I live so it makes it convenient when I'm in the mood for Mexican food. It's a bigger, brighter and cleaner space than the Hermosa location. I like that they have two giant flat screens that were tuned to Fox News. The wait staff is attentive and the food is pretty good. I usually get the Asher Burrito which is huge and stuffed with scrambled eggs, chicken, black beans and avocado slices. They slather a tasty sauce and melted cheddar cheese on top and comes with sides of sour cream and guacamole. The salsa that comes with the traditional chips is good too, just the right amount of spiciness to it but not overbearing. Great chill environment and if you feel like enjoying the good weather, you could also eat out on the patio. Go here for a good Mexican meal!

When "Baja Fresh" has a better salsa selection than your Mexican Restaurant, your restaurant blows. I ordered an enchilada plate, and I pretty much got a pound of cheese melted over some tortillas and tomato sauce. This was bad Mexican food, but it was also just bad food in general. I need to find some great Mexican food in the South Bay, not just some place that puts La Victoria salsa on all their plates! To end on a positive note, at least the waitress was friendly... And cute! :-)

This place had potential from the looks of it, but after I stepped inside, the illusion went away. First, there was no one in this place, always a bad sign at 6pm. Second, we were given salsa that tasted liked La Victoria or Pace Picante sauce, along with semi stale chips. I'm pretty sure the salsa wasn't freshly made. Last, my "chicken tostada" came out as a mound of iceberg lettuce, cheese, guacamole and sour cream. No tostada in sight. After digging through the lettuce, found the overly cooked tostada and some beans and meat. Sadly, the meat was too salty and spiced with weird spices. It was so gross that I ate the lettuce and got the hell out of there. Also, I hate it when I can't order Horchata as a drink. Last, the prices were too high. $4.75 for a taco (no sides) and $9 for a plate full of lettuce with a tostada and meat hidden in it? I think not! Service was hit-or-miss, which is bad when you're the only one in the place. Sorry El Gringo, you strike out on so many levels. I would prefer Wahoos to this place ten times over. Not going to visit this place ever again.

I simply love El Gringo restaurants...I have been a fan since the early 90's when we lived in Hermosa Beach and went weekly to the Hermosa Beach location......Love the carnitas taco dinner....but really, everything on the menu is fabulous...The homemade salsa is great..Sometimes it is hit and miss on the chips though.....Great beer selection....

We were starving. He asked me what I was hungry for. I replied, "tacos." This restaurant felt like a hole in the wall place; it was hidden, cozy, and private. No one was there on a Sunday night because the Laker game was on. I didn't seem to mine. I ordered their Carne Asada tacos for $4.75. I'm glad I asked the waitress how big the taco was because it was gigantic. It had plenty of meat. I was surprised that I even finished it. My date ordered their El Gringo burrito. They served their soda in those old fashion red plastic coke cups. The tablecloths looked like those Mexican blankets. Lots of wood, cozy chairs. Lots of beer displayed in a cabinet. It wasn't fancy or overcrowded. It had charm. I'm glad he took me here.

Ambiance - 3 stars A small sized restaurant, but doesn't quite fit that "hole in the wall Mexican joint" vibe, but it is clean. TV size is decent, good enough for you and your buddies to come in to catch the game during dinner. Service - 4 stars The service was good. Food and drinks are served quickly. Our waitress was attentive, we even had another waitress that came by to check up even though ours was still on duty. Quality of Food - 4 stars Sangria is good here. Carne asada tacos are just ok, I've had better. They have their own hot sauce that tastes great. I have had better Mexican food, but this place is not bad at all. Pricing - 2 stars In my opinion, it's a bit overpriced considering the ambiance & quality of food. Although, the portions are decent. Pros: There's a special for every work day of the week!! Monday Margaritas, Taco Tuesdays, Sangria Wednesdays, etc. Unlike it's Hermosa Beach location, they have free parking and you can usually find a space. Cons: They close at 9:00 PM every day. Overall, I like coming here. It has a warm vibe. A nice spot to go to after work to meet with friends for a beer and good conversation.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
